Convert WinHelp to HTML Help

See About this website for notes about tips and links provided.

In 1999 I did many conversion tests (using the Help authoring tools [HATs] that were available then) as part of a feasibility study into converting Winhelp (*.HLP) files into HTML Help (*.CHM) files for a client. The results of those 1999 tests and the accompanying documentation are available as a PDF file (256kb).

Caveat

Any comments about the merits or otherwise of various conversion options with the tools mentioned are based on OLD versions of those tools, so should be ignored. I have NOT updated this information so details about specific tools WILL be out of date, links to software/websites etc. may no longer work, specific HATs may now automate some of these processes, and so on. This study was for a specific set of files, for a specific client—and the contents are more than 9 years old.
